For keyboard and fixed audio media, “Microcosmicon” presents a cantus firmus adapted from an étude from Bartok’s piano method _Mikrokosmos_. The keyboard part of “Microcosmicon” arises from the placement of this cantus firmus in counterpoint with permutations of itself in duple and quadruple rhythmic augmentation. This structure is next ornamented by wow-and-flutter-infused samples adapted from a cassette recording of a narrative about extraterrestrial adventure. Select, discrete elements of these tape-derived components are then processed through an echo matrix of imbricated periodicities.
